I have been doing a lot of research on the raw food lifestyle and its affect on womens periods and have come to realize that once again our society has lied to us! Ugh. I hate it when they do that! Here is everything you need to know in the links below
Menstruation is it really necessary?
Blog: Raw Food & Your Period
I have always been plagued by painful periods it got a little bit better when I went raw but not by much. The only thing that did change is the number of days it lasted. Instead of 8 it went down to 3! While growing up I was always taught by my mother that the pain was just my bodies way of preparing me for pregnancy later in life and that I should appreciate it. Why did I have to "prepare" every single month, I would ask her. She would just give me a heating pad and tell me to rest. I thought there was nothing I could do about it so I'd just pop a Tylenol and cross my fingers and hope the pain would go away soon. It wasn't until a few months ago that I started reading about how some women didn't even get periods at all after only four months of being raw! My first thought was - thats unnatural, but then I started thinking -what am I defining as natural? A diet of cooked food is now considered a natural way of eating so that made think that maybe in this case what I thought to be unnatural was really in fact as natural as it gets. Our society has changed its opinion on periods, not even fifty years ago it was labeled as a condition/disease of the female species but now its embraced as a part of becoming a woman. So which is it!? A disease or a rite of passage? I wanted an answer to this question... so thats when the research began. In the above links you will find an extensive overview of this debate, and make the decision yourself. As it stands now I am convinced that periods are nothing but a hemorrhage inside the body stripping it of nutrients and inflaming the uterus. Our bodies attempts to remove toxins. Let me know what you think or if it changes any of your minds.

Who thought cheating wouldn't feel so good!?
Ugh! I'm disappointed in myself... I cheated on raw food. I hate to say it but it tasted so good! The insatiable craving struck about an hour ago, I walked by a loaf of bread and then began thinking about all the things I could make with it. My mind kept drifting and drifting into recipe land and I couldn't get it back, as hard as I tried. So I said, you know what having a piece of toast won't kill me so I gave in. The bread tasted different than I remember, although it was 100% whole wheat it had a "fake" kind of taste. But I liked it anyways, that was until 15 minutes ago when my stomach started aching now I'm filled with a sense of regret. Curse cravings!

Nutritious Party in a Glass: Green Smoothies
When I first started eating raw I took a lot of tips from Natalia Rose's book Raw Food Detox, and one of those was to start your day with a green juice, usually kale with apple and lemon. This was my least favorite part of the lifestyle. Upon waking I knew that I had to drink 8oz of this sweet and sour concoction, which I never felt actually changed my energy levels like so many said it would. That was until I discovered the GREEN SMOOTHIE! Its been a rocky road of trial and error to get the flavors and consistency just right but wow has it been worth it!! Now I can't start my day until I've had my fill of the green stuff. My energy has increased, I'm able to think even more clearly and it fills me up for at least 3 1/2 hours! I suggest everyone start doing it if you haven't already. I swear it was one of the best things I could do for my body. If you need some recipes or ideas to make your own I suggest goneraw.com they have amazing recipes! I frequent that site quite often and I never get bored.

Am I crazy?
The other day my friends came to my house and surprised me with lunch. Usually I would be excited for free food buuut when I saw what they had brought I lost my appetite. They had spent $3 on a piece of dead animal flesh, processed, fortified, enriched "wheat" , week old tomato slices and unhealthy iceberg lettuce shreds - GROSS!!! When I refused they looked at me as if I WERE CRAZY! Can you believe that! I explained to them what they were really eating but they didn't care instead they just teased me by waving a fry in front of my face. All I could do was laugh and grab an apple to eat!

Jicama/Cucumber Salad
This salad is perfect for spring! The sweetness of the jicama and the sour taste of lemon are a great combination. Really refreshing. I randomly came up with this "salad" when those were the only three ingredients I happened to have on hand- plus I am totally obsessed with lemons so I use them every chance I get!
Half of a medium sized jicama
Half of a large cucumber
One lemon
With a vegetable peeler, peel both cucumber and jicama into thin strips as shown in the picture.
Squeeze the lemon juice on top and add some salt
or chili powder! A really refreshing treat!
